Born in a seaside town off of the coast of France, Christian Dior lived with his family. His father owned a small yet profitable fertilizer company and had hopes that Christian would become a diplomat. However, Christian had other interests. He loved art and fashion. He enjoyed sketching and would earn extra money by selling them for 10 cents a piece. After he left school, he received a decent sum of money from his father thus enabling him to open a small art gallery where he sold pieces by the likes of Pablo Picasso and other great artists. After a family tragedy forced him to sell the gallery and a stint in the military, Dior joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong as one if its primary designers. By December of 1964, backed by the Cotton fabric magnate Marcel Boussace, Dior was able to open his own fashion house. A master of creating silhouettes and shapes, Dior gained popularity for going against the common trends at the time by creating pieces that accentuated the woman’s curves although he suffered some backlash from his excessive use of fabric, he was soon able to satiate the masses and soon, he became instrumental in making Paris one of the Fashion capitals of the world.
